After spending over a decade with the corporate world chasing materialistic dreams and leading a typical urban lifestyle, we decided to call it a day and we wrapped up our lives in the cities. We moved to the blue mountains – The Nilgiris in search of a better quality of life. We bought a piece of forest, did farming, built an earth house, worked in the fields alongside tribals who lived around us, listened to the elephants trumpet, bears growl – all of this over a period of one year. During this time, we realised that the “better” quality of life that we were looking for wasn’t limited to OUR quality of life but was for the community we were part of. We realised that there are a lot of women rearing to do much more with their lives, they just need that extra nudge and the platform to express. This was the birth of Indian Yards.

Indian Yards empowers women of The Nilgiris with skill and employment. We up-skill women to be fine crafters of cotton fabric & yarn. We handcraft a range of sustainable home decor, kitchen and macrame products. We started with 5, we are now 30 and our goal is to impact 5000 women across Nilgiris by the end of 2022.

We started with patchwork cotton quilts and then added cotton bags, cotton aprons and cotton face masks to our product spectrum. We are currently focussed on building and furthering our macrame portfolio.
